OTHER STUFF

It was my third time at the National
Young Writers' Festival in Newcastle, NSW. There was joy,
there was sadness and now there's pictures.
People looked at me in awe when I told them
I've been three times now. Their eyes said, "Wow, you're
a veteran, and I want to sit cross-legged and learn of your
experiences, and sniff of your holy backpack and maybe do
dirty things later in the hotel room."
So here's some people who were there also:

Justin
Heazlewood plays a lovely improvised song at the "Why
Are Writers Such Bastards?" panel discussion, hosted
by performer/poet Benito Di Fonzo (looking on, with
a beer). I read some nasty haiku and insulted the audience.
It was great.

Voiceworks
is the youth magazine for youth people who are youthful. Issue
#54 got launched at NYWF. Here's Kelly Chandler (editor)
with some asshole.

At another bit of the old Voiceworks
table were Ula Majewski (poet, Voiceworks editorial
committee) and a fella whom I dunno who he is.

Tom Doig and Anna Krien (also
ed.com).

My stars! It's Glenn Smith, who hoiked
the new issue of Glenjamin (his excellent collaboration
with Ben Hutchings)
up to the fest, as well as his new anthology, Country Cousins,
and his collaboration with Ross
Tesoriero, Entrailer Trash. All big, all colourful,
all good. And at right is the head of Troy Mingramm,
whose new issue of Troy's Tales (#4) is another slice
of drunken, confused humanity. You know somebody just like
Troy (but I've met the original).

Two fine gentlemen. Ross Tesoriero's
glass is empty, and he can't be happy about that. Dann
Lennard publishes Betty Paginated, the magazine
for the wrestling, porn and snack food junkie. So, most men,
really. And a few very special women, too.

Anthony
Woodward's comic is called Velvet Soap. Leigh
Milward's zine is called Oompa-Lumpen. Together,
they are... Anthony and Leigh.

Here's Gerard Ashworth and Jo Waite.
Gerard produces comics such as Electric Ferret and
Modern Murder. Jo produces comics such as Sex &
Violence and See Jo Run. Gerard is fascinated by
some awful music video he's seeing on the TV at the Hunter
(see previous NYWF reports).

And just for good measure, here's a shot of
Glenn making a face.

Something I drew on the plane back to Melbourne.
A hot chick in the next seat up liked it. Then she talked
to somebody about how painful her new breast implants were.
She looked 18, but apparently she was 27. Isn't nature amazing?
I picked up lots of good stuff in Newcastle,
notably the comics/zines I mentioned above. Also good: Mr
Grebo's Dildos Not Bombs #3, Adam
Ford's hastily-made new Jutchy Ya Yas, Leigh
Rigozzi's Zombievideo And Other Tales and Natasha
Cho's Sweet Valley Zine #4.
NYWF:
great comics, good zines, maybe avoid the performance art
and go drinking instead.
